Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Brachiaria

Characteristics

Tufted annual 200-600 mm high; culm decumbent, branching or rooting at lower nodes. Leaf blade 30-150 x 4-10 mm, broadly linear to narrowly lanceolate, velvety pubescent; ligule a fringe of hairs. Racemes 20-70 mm long, secund; rachis triquetrous; spikelets solitary, arranged neatly in one to two rows; pedicels of equal lengths. Spikelet 2.7-4.0 mm long, usually hairy; lower glume 1/2 as long as spikelet, not separated from upper glume by an internode, 3-nerved; upper lemma subacute, rugulose; anther 0.8-1.5 mm long.
More
Annual, tufted (culms decumbent and branching at lower nodes), up to 0.6 m high. Leaf blades 30-150 mm long, 4-10 mm wide, broadly linear to narrowly lanceolate, velvety pubescent. Spikelets 2.7-4.0 mm long. Racemes secund, 20-70 mm long; spikelets arranged in 2 rows; pedicels equal; lower glume 3-nerved, half the spikelet length.
A grass. It is soft and slender. It grows each year from seed. It grows 30 cm high. It forms tufts. The leaves are 6 mm wide. The seed heads are 5 cm long. The seeds are 3 mm long by 2 mm wide and in a single line.
Inflorescence of 2–8 racemes, these 1–7 cm. long, bearing single (rarely paired at base of longer racemes) spikelets in 2 neat rows on a triquetrous rhachis.
Spikelets 2.7–4 mm. long, hispidulous (very rarely glabrous) acute to pungently cuspidate, borne on a stipe c. 0.5 mm. long.
Superior lemma granulose to rugulose, subacute.
