Characteristics

Densely caespitose perennial, with a comparatively stout, bulky, fibrous base.. Culms (15–)25–50(–70) cm. high, 1–1.5 mm. in diameter at the base.. Leaf-blades basal or cauline, narrowly linear, involute or rarely flat, 3–15(–25) cm. long and up to 3 mm. wide, mostly straight, seldom curved, glabrous or sparsely pilose towards the base, tapering to a fine point.. Spikes (2–)3–5(–7), stout, 2.5–6 cm. long, erect or spreading.. Spikelets 3.4–4.8(–5.5) mm. long, bronze in colour; lower glume not, or only slightly asymmetrical, 3.4–4.8(–5.4) mm. long, obtuse; upper glume 3.3–4.7(–5.4) mm. long, obtuse; lemma 2.5–4 mm. long, obtuse to broadly obtuse; palea 2–2.7 mm. long, scaberulous along the keels.. Spikelets 3.6–5.3 mm long; inferior glume slightly asymmetrical, lanceolate to narrowly oblong-lanceolate in profile, obtuse at the apex, scabrid or stifflyciliate on the keel, rarely glabrous; superior glume narrowly oblong-lanceolate in profile, obtuse at the apex, scaberulous along the keel towards the apex, or glabrous; lemma 3–4 mm long, narrowly elliptic in profile, obtuse to truncate at the apex, sometimes shortly emarginate, often mucronulate; anthers 1.5–2.3 mm long.
