Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Brachylaena

Characteristics

Medium-sized tree 3-13 m high (rarely a multistemmed shrub); trunk to 30 cm in diam.; bark brown to light grey, smooth or longitudinally fissured, soft and spongy; branches sulcate, minutely tomentose, glabrescent. Leaves petiolate, coriaceous, elliptic or obovate, 3-14 x 1.2-4.5 (-6) cm, base cuneate (often with small revolute flaps), margins somewhat revolute, entire or distally sinuate to slightly lobed, apex rounded or obtuse to acuminate, glabrous or (when young) with reddish scales or flat, branched trichomes more or less covering the abaxial surface, very rarely tomentellous abaxially when young, glandular; petiole 0.5-1.5 cm long. Capitula in axillary or terminal panicles. Male inflorescence 2.5-6 cm long, branched to 1 or 2 orders, but sometimes the subtending leaf is so small that several inflorescences seem to merge; capitula 6-24-flowered, 6-9 mm long; stalks of individual capitula 2-6 mm long, glabrous or scaly-pubescent, sometimes glandular, with or without bracts; involucre 4-5.5 mm long; phyllaries 3-6-seriate, elliptic or ovate, 1.5-5 x 1.2-2.5 mm, obtuse or acute, glandular, glabrous or the outermost furfuraceous; corolla tube cylindric, 2.5-4 mm long, sometimes widened distally, lobes 1.5-3 x 0.3-0.4 mm, glandular and often pilose, anthers 2-3.1 mm long, tailed, style 5-7 mm long with linear branches 0.6-0.9 mm long; achene cylindric, 0.5-1.5 mm long, pubescent; pappus 3-5 mm long. Female inflorescence 3-10 cm long, branched to 1 or 2 orders; capitula 4-13-flowered; stalks of individual capitula 1-5 mm, glabrous or scaly-pubescent, with or without bracts; involucre 4.5-6.7 mm high; phyllaries 6-seriate, ovate to narrowly ovate, 1.5-4.5 x 1.5-3.2 mm, acute, the outer puberulous and ciliate, the inner glabrous with membranous margins; corolla tube cylindric, 3-4 mm long, lobes 1.2-1.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm, style 5-6 mm long, distally hollow, with short, obtuse branches. Achenes cylindric, triquetrous or slightly flattened, 2.2-3.6 mm long, 0.3-1.4 mm in diam., faintly 4-5-ribbed, pubescent; pappus 4.5-6.3 mm long.
