Female capitula: corollas filiform, lobes 5 short; anthers 0, staminodes occasionally present; style branches exserted, short flat ovate-lanceolate; achenes subcylindric-fusiform, c. 8-ribbed, ± pubescent; pappus copious, consisting of barbellate setae in several series.
Male capitula smaller than the female, corollas funnel-shaped, 5-lobed; anther thecae exserted, bases tailed; style terete, thickened above, bifid, exserted; ovary abortive or rudimentary; pappus sparse, 1-seriate, barbellate or subplumose.
Leaves alternate, petiolate or subsessile, persistently tomentose or tomentellous on lower surface (in the Flora Zambesiaca area), entire or spinulose-denticulate or repand or coarsely dentate towards the apex.
Capitula unisexual, disciform, several-many-flowered in the Flora Zambesiaca area; receptacle epaleate; phyllaries imbricate, the outermost series often extending onto the capitulum stalk.
Synflorescences consisting of numerous capitula in terminal or axillary panicles or racemes, or capitula arranged in clusters or glomerules, capitula stalked or sessile.
