Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, 1.5-4 m high, much-branched; trunk to 10 cm in diameter, bark brown to dark grey, rough, fissured; branches grey, sulcate, tomentellous or glabrous. Leaves often on short shoots, aromatic when crushed, subsessile or shortly petiolate, elliptic or narrowly (ob-)ovate, 1-6 x 0.4-1.8 cm, base cuneate, margins entire or with a few teeth, less often spinulose-dentate, apex acute to rounded and spiny-mucronate, glabrous adaxially (except when very young), white-tomentellous and glandular abaxially; petiole to 5 mm long; main veins faint. Capitula in dense, 1-few-headed axillary inflorescences; corollas white or cream to yellowish, faintly scented. Male inflorescence of solitary heads, or of up to 3 heads together (though on short shoots several axillary heads may seem confluent); capitula 8-14 mm high, with 7-15 florets; stalks of individual capitula 0.5-6 mm, without or with few bracts; involucre obconic, 5-8 mm high; phyllaries 4-6-seriate, 1-5 x 1-1.6 mm, rounded or obtuse, (slightly) pubescent, glandular, ciliate; corolla tube narrowly cylindric, abruptly widened near the lobes, 3.3-4.5 mm long, lobes 1.5-2.5 mm long, usually inrolled, 0.5-0.7 mm wide, sparsely glandular, stamens long-exserted, anthers 1.5-2.2 mm long (tails to 0.3 mm long), filaments exserted, 1.3-1.7 mm long, style 6.5-9.6 mm long, the branches (not separated) 1.7 mm long, densely papillose; achene a minute stub 0.2-0.4 mm long; pappus of rather few bristles 4-5 mm long, sometimes distally slightly flattened or subplumose. Female inflorescence solitary or in groups of up to four, but inflorescences of adjacent axils may seem confluent; capitula 8-14 mm long, 8-12-flowered; stalks of individual capitula 0.8-2(-8) mm; involucre obconic or campanulate, 6.5-9 mm high; phyllaries 5-8-seriate, ovate to oblong, 1.5-7 x 1-2 mm, obtuse to acute, the outer slightly pubescent and ciliate, the inner with membranous margins; receptacle flat, areolate; corolla tube cylindric from a widened base, 2.3-4 mm long, lobes 0.4-1 x ± 0.2 mm, style 3.6-5.3 mm long, with ovate, obtuse branches 0.5-0.7 mm long. Achenes ellipsoid, at maturity flattened, 2.8-4.6 x 1 x 0.3 mm thick, 4-5-ribbed, pubescent or sparsely pilose, glandular; pappus of many bristles, possibly 2-seriate, 3.3-7 mm long, somewhat flattened proximally.
