Perennial; culms slender, wiry, branching, usually geniculate-spreading, 15-90 cm. long, sparsely pilose, densely bearded at the nodes; sheaths much shorter than the internodes, pilose; ligule 2-3 mm. long, erose-ciliate; blades 5-12 cm. or some-times as much as 20 cm. long, 2-5 mm. wide, scabrous, sparsely to rather densely pilose on the upper surface; racemes 4-12 cm. long, sometimes reduced to one or two spikelets; spikelets 2-2.5 cm. long, 4-to 8-flowered, the pedicels 2-3 mm. long, densely pubescent; glumes subobtuse, the first 6-9 mm. long, the second 8-11 mm. long, glabrous; lemma of lowest floret 8-10 mm. long, scabrous at least toward the summit, the awn mostly 2-5 mm. long, or rarely as much as 1 cm. long.
