Characteristics

Annual, caespitose. Culms 12–70 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths densely pilose; blade 8.5–22 cm long, 1–5 mm wide, densely pilose. Panicles erect, contracted, 2–12 cm long; primary branches slightly spreading or appressed. Spikelets erect, oblong, 20–35 mm long, with 6–11 bisexual florets; pedicel 0.8–7 mm long. Glumes equal or lower glume slightly shorter than upper, with midnerve scaberulous and intercostal regions glabrous or hirsute; lower glume 5–9 mm long, ±dorsally rounded, 3–5-nerved; upper glume 8–12 mm long, keeled, 5–9-nerved. Callus blunt, laterally scabrous to villous. Basal lemma slightly laterally compressed, 9–18 mm long, ±rounded on back, 7–9-nerved, glabrous or hirsute; awn dorsal, arising 2.5–3.6 mm below lemma tip, 6–15 mm long, straight or curved or geniculate (awn of lower floret usually straight, awn of upper florets slightly twisted at base and curved to ±geniculate), entered by 1 nerve. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, glabrous. Anthers 1.2–1.5 mm long.
