Characteristics

Short-lived perennial, caespitose. Culms to 130 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths usually densely pilose; blade 15–43 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, sparsely pilose or glabrous. Panicles erect, loosely contracted or open, 11.5–30 cm long; primary branches spreading. Spikelets erect, narrowly elliptic, (15–) 20–30 mm long, with 6–10 bisexual florets; pedicel 3–15 mm long. Glumes subequal or unequal, keeled, with midnerve scaberulous and intercostal regions glabrous to scabrous; lower glume 7.7–12.8 mm long, 5–7-nerved; upper glume 9.7–13.9 mm long, 7–9-nerved. Callus blunt, glabrous. Lemma strongly laterally compressed, 11–14 mm long, keeled, 7–9-nerved; nerves glabrous or scaberulous; intercostal regions shortly pilose in upper part or scaberulous; awn subapical, (2–) 3–10 mm long, straight, entered by 3 nerves. Palea usually slightly shorter than lemma or rarely 2/3 length of lemma, glabrous. Anthers 0.7–3 mm long.
