Loosely tufted perennial, (0.2-)0.5-1.5 m high; old leaf sheaths flimsy, curly, not fibrous; culm geniculate or weak and scandent. Leaf blade 100-300 x 5-13 mm, hairy or rarely glabrous; sheaths hispid; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence an open and nodding to contracted panicle; pedicels scabrid; culms glabrous below inflorescence. Spikelet 10-30 x 2-6 mm, narrowly oblong to wedge-shaped; glumes unequal, shorter than spikelet; awn up to 5 mm long; lower glume 1-3-nerved; upper 3-5-nerved. Florets 5-many; lemma entire or lobed, margins hyaline, hairy, awned below apex; awn 2-12 mm long; palea ciliate on keels, glabrous between keels; ovary with a conspicuous hairy appendage at apex; anther 2.2-3.0 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Feb.
Perennial; up to 1.5 m high; tufted. Leaf blades 100-300 x 5-13 mm. Flowers: panicle open; pedicels scabrid; spikelets 10-30 x 2-6 mm; open or with flowers closely arranged; glabrous or scabrid; moderately laterally compressed to terete; usually pale green; lower glume 1-3-nerved; upper 3-5-nerved; lemmas 8-12 mm long; awns up to 5 mm long; anthers 2.2-3.0(5.0) mm long.
Perennial, tufted, up to 1.5 m high. Leaf blades 100-300 mm long, 5-13 mm wide. Spikelets 10-30 mm long, 2-6 mm wide. Panicle open, pedicels scabrid; spikelets open or with flowers closely arranged; lower glume 1-3-nerved, upper 3-5-nerved; lemmas 8-12 mm long, awns up to 5 mm long.
Panicle up to 28 cm. long, elliptic to broadly ovate in outline, open, lax, erect to slightly nodding; rhachis rather slender, angular, scabrous; branches filiform, very flexuous, angular, scaberulous, 2-3-nate, not divided in the lower 1/2-1/3; branchlets with 1-3-spikelets.
Leaf-laminae 8-30 x .-1.25(1.75) cm., linear, tapering to a soft point, expanded, flaccid, dark-green to glaucous, scaberulous on both surfaces or sometimes smooth below, scabrous along the margins, scattered pilose or rarely glabrous.
