Characteristics

Plants deciduous herbs, acaulescent, 8-10 cm high, arising from solitary, dorsiventrally flattened to pyramidal tubers 1.5-3 cm thick, with up to 7 spreading, narrowly wedge-shaped roots. Leaves erect, light luminous green, 2(-3), all subtended by a basal, tight membranous sheath, 3-10 mm long; outer 2 leaves almost equal in length, narrowly channelled on adaxial surface, narrowly lanceolate, acute, 5-10 cm long and 2-4 mm broad; central leaf, when present, terete, acute, 3-6 cm long and 1.5-3 mm in diameter. Inflorescence erect, solitary, or occasionally 2 after prolonged, unseasonal rains; peduncle ca. 7 cm long but up to 28 cm after unusual rains extend the growing season, 1-1.5 mm wide; raceme 2.5-15 cm long and 3 cm broad. Flowers 3-13.15 mm wide with tepals non-reflexed; bracts narrowly triangular, membranous, 1.5 mm long; pedicels spreading, 1-1.5 cm long; tepals glistening, luminous cadmium yellow with a prominent green central vein; outer whorl elliptic, 7 x 3 mm, inner whorl obovate with undulate margin towards the apex, 7 x 5 mm. Filaments slender, bearded, dimorphic, 6 mm long, the upper with longer hairs than the lower; hairs elongate to narrowly clavate, 1.2-2 mm long; anthers oblong, yellowish-brown, 0.6 mm long, pollen green, later brown. Ovary globose, orange, 1.8 mm in diameter, style and stigma yellow, 5 mm long, style with occasional papillae below stigma. Seeds black, flattened, deltoid, pusticulate, no more than 1.2 mm wide.
