Characteristics

Plants deciduous herbs, 6-7 cm high arising from broadly deltoid to rounded, oblong tubers 1.5 cm high and 1.5 to 2.5 cm across with thick, extended, deltoid roots. Leaves 3, erect, multiveined, light green, circinate in the apical half, subtended by an elongated papyraceous sheath, 1.5 to 4 cm long, with numerous striae, surface covered with slightly raised, microscopic, whitish plaques; leaves flattened, subterete to terete, acute, 5-8 cm long and 2.5-4 mm broad towards the base, with a shallow adaxial channel diminishing towards the apical third; as the plant matures and as flowering begins in late spring, most of the circinate portion of the leaf dies off. Inflorescence erect, solitary; peduncle slender, 10-12 cm long and 1 mm thick; raceme 4-6 cm long. Flowers 6-16, with 1-3 opening at a time 2-3 hours after sunrise; bracts triangular, acuminate, membranous, ca. 5 mm long, pedicels 1-1.2 cm long, spreading at right angles to the peduncle; outer tepals strongly reflexed, clasping pedicel, elliptic, obtuse, light yellow, with a greenish tinge and an orange central vein, 7 x 2.5 mm, inner reflexed at 45° to the pedicel, obovate, with lightly undulate margin, light yellow with a greenish tinge and a green central vein, 7 x 4 mm. Filaments slender, bearded and dimorphic, ca. 7 mm long, outer strongly recurved, with a single cushion of hairs all pointing towards the anthers, inner horizontal with 2 cushions of hairs, occasionally hairs branched; hairs clavate, ca. 2 mm long, with spherical apex; anthers rounded to oblong. Ovary oblong, green, ca. 1 mm long; style decurving towards apical third, 6 mm long. Capsule and seeds not seen.

Leaves 2-6, erect, withering and forming tight spirals or curling back from apex at flowering, succulent, tightly clasping below to form a (30-)40-50 mm long, smooth, solid neck of white to dark, papery sheaths. Flowers in an erect, wiry raceme, light yellow. Capsule not known.
