Characteristics

Herb, usually annual. Roots fibrous. Leaves 6-16, 1-5 mm wide at midpoint, green, rarely glaucous, glabrous. Scapes several to many, terete, erect. Perianth segments 3-7 mm long. Stamens and style usually inclined in opposite directions; 3 inner stamens long and bearded near apex of filament, 3 outer short and glabrous; anthers reddish, orange or yellow-brown, appearing dorsifixed, erect or ±horizontal after dehiscence. Ovules 2 per locule; style straight, 0.5-1.5 mm long; stigma entire or 3-lobed. Capsule globose, 2-4.5 mm long; pedicel 8-25 mm long, erect or sometimes recurved. Seeds without wing.

Environment

It grows in temperate places but can grow into subtropical places. It needs well drained soil. It suits dry soils and can grow in full sunlight. It can stand heavy frosts. In Tasmania it grows from sea level to 400 m altitude.
