Leaves bipinnate with (1)2–7 pairs of pinnae, without specialised glands on petiole and rachis; leaflets up to 15 per pinna, alternate, eglandular, petiolulate; stipules very small and quickly falling.
Inflorescence of pendulous racemes of small flowers, fairly dense but less so than in Erythrophleum, usually in groups at ends of branches; bracts very small, persistent until the flower opens.
Stamens 10; filaments glabrous; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; connective shortly projecting beyond the anther.
Ovary subsessile, tomentose, with 1–2 ovules; style very short, ending in a funnel-shaped stigma split down one side.
Calyx of 5 lobes connate on their lower part, slightly imbricate but ± open from an early stage.
Petals 5, equal, free, strongly reflexed about their middle after anthesis, glabrous.
Pods stipitate, elliptic to suborbicular, coriaceous, indehiscent, one-seeded.
Seeds compressed, areolate on both faces, with endosperm.
Flowers hermaphrodite.
