Burkea Benth.

Genus

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae

Characteristics

Unarmed trees with rusty-tomentose young shoots. Leaves alternate, bipinnate; stipules very small, quickly falling; specialized glands restricted to petiole and rhachis absent; leaflets alternate, eglandular. Inflorescences of elongate spikes often paniculately aggregated; bracts very small, persistent until the flowers open. Flowers hermaphrodite. Calyx-lobes 5, slightly imbricate, but almost open from an early stage, connate below into a short tube. Petals 5, imbricate, equal, glabrous, without claws. Stamens 10; filaments glabrous; anthers dorsifixed, 1.5–2 mm. long, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; connective shortly projecting beyond the anther. Ovary subsessile, densely rusty-tomentose, 1–2-ovulate; style very short, ending in a funnel-shaped stigma slit down one side. Pods stipitate, coriaceous, flattened, elliptic, indehiscent, one-seeded. Seeds areolate on each face (as in most Mimosoïdeae), with endosperm.

Inflorescence of pendulous racemes of small flowers, fairly dense but less so than in Erythrophleum, usually in groups at ends of branches; bracts very small, persistent until the flower opens.
Stamens 10; filaments glabrous; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; connective shortly projecting beyond the anther.
Ovary subsessile, tomentose, with 1–2 ovules; style very short, ending in a funnel-shaped stigma split down one side.
Calyx of 5 lobes connate on their lower part, slightly imbricate but ± open from an early stage.
Petals 5, equal, free, strongly reflexed about their middle after anthesis, glabrous.
Pods stipitate, elliptic to suborbicular, coriaceous, indehiscent, one-seeded.
Seeds compressed, areolate on both faces, with endosperm.
Flowers hermaphrodite.
