Characteristics

Emergent, erect to 0.7 m high, with radical, petiolate leaves. Leaves with petiole 3–23 cm long; blade elliptic-lanceolate-oblanceolate, with several longitudinal veins; apex acute, tipped with hard, blunt mucro. Inflorescence of 3–12 (–20) slender-pedicelled flowers, exserted well above leaves. Peduncle 5–40 cm long. Pedicel (1–) 5–14 cm long. Sepals 3, 4–6 mm long. Petals 3, exceeding sepals, white. Stamens usually 8 or 9. Carpels 4–9. Fruiting carpels c. 8–13 mm long, acute, opening above to release the many small seeds. Seeds broadly oblong, compressed, smooth, c. 0.5 mm long; embryo curved.
