Stems somewhat woody, many-branched, glabrous or occasionally glabrescent with few minute hairs. Leaves with petiole 3.0-6.5 cm long and 1.5-4.0 cm wide, glabrous to rarely shortly pubescent; pinnatisect, lower lobes ovate to broadly elliptic, obtuse, narrowed at base, entire to 1-or 2-toothed; central lobes broadly lanceolate to rhombic, variously toothed or laciniate. Flowers carmine, rose-lilac to violet, throat darker, fragrant, supra-axillary, solitary; pedicels 2.5-3.7 cm long, stout, spreading, glabrous, becoming recurved in fruit. Bracteoles 2, opposite, subsessile immediately below calyx, subcircular to reniform, 8.5-16 mm in diam., glabrous or sparsely furfuraceous. Calyx 15-20 mm long in flower, campanulate to urceolate, longer in fruit, 10-nerved without, shortly 4-5 lobed; lobes reticulately veined within. Corolla tube about 3 cm long, curving upward, inflated above middle; limb 3-7 cm in diam., spreading; lobes 1.5-2 x 2-3 cm. Stamens glabrous. Capsule (dried) 1.5-2.5 cm in diam. Seeds 2-3.25 mm long.
