Characteristics

Straggling shrub, up to 2.5 m. tall, or rarely a small tree.. Twigs glabrous.. Leaf-blade broadly oblong to oblong-ovate, 2.5–3.2 cm. long, 1.7–2.7 cm. wide, rounded or retuse at the apex, rounded to subcordate at the base, fleshy, glabrous.. Inflorescence a fascicle of 1–3 flowers in the upper leaf-axils; pedicels 5–7 mm. long, shortly pubescent.. Outer sepals elliptic, 7–9 mm. long, concave; inner sepals a little shorter and broader, not concave.. Petals 0.. Androphore 7–10 mm. long, dark red, glabrous; appendage subequal, adnate to the androphore at the base for 3–5 mm., funnel-shaped, ± 6 mm. wide at the apex, with a sinuate margin, dark red to crimson; stamens 5; filaments unequal; one free, 7–10 mm. long; the others joined into a 3–5 mm. long tube, free above, dark red; anthers ± 3 mm. long.. Gynophore up to 2.6 cm. long.. Fruits cylindrical, 2–2.5 cm. long, up to 0.6 cm. across, slightly torulose, very shortly soft-pubescent, sometimes with interspersed stipitate glands; internal tissues orange.. Fig. 13/3.
