Characteristics

Leaf linear-lanceolate, 80–140 × 6–12 mm, densely hairy. Flower stem 200–350 mm tall, densely hairy, 1-or 2-flowered. Flowers 50–70 mm across, smell like hot metal, usually dark red to maroon, but in some populations a mixture of cream, pink and red flowers; labellum dark red, base paler; calli reddish black; column red; sepals and petals with relatively thick, blackish, glandular tips (sometimes resembling poorly developed clubs). Dorsal sepal incurved, 40–65 × 3–4 mm. Lateral sepals obliquely deflexed to drooping, 40–65 × 4–5 mm, divergent. Petals similarly arranged, 35–50 × 2.5–3.5 mm. Labellum obscurely 3-lobed, 14–18 × 8–11 mm; margins with numerous thin, dark purple teeth to 1.8 mm long; tip recurved. Basal calli 6–8, erect, crowded, to 1.3 mm long. Lamina calli to 2 mm long, in 4 or 6 crowded rows onto midlobe. Column 12–14 × 4–6 mm; basal glands c. 0.8 mm long, obovoid, yellow with a red base.
