Leaf linear-lanceolate, 50–110 × 4–6 mm. Flower stem 150–250 mm tall, 1-flowered. Flowers 50–70 mm across, smell like hot metal or a hot motor, usually dark red to crimson, occasionally pinkish with red stripes, scented; sepals with thin, blackish red clubs 6–15 × 1 mm; petals lacking clubs. Dorsal sepal erect, 30–40 × 1.5–2 mm. Lateral sepals spreading stiffly, 30–40 × 4–4.5 mm, divergent. Petals similarly arranged, 25–35 × 2–2.5 mm. Labellum stiffly hinged, 11–13 × 5–6 mm, whitish with dark veins, apex dark red; margins with 8–12 pairs of curved teeth to 1 mm long; tip recurved. Calli to 1.3 mm long, maroon, in 4 or 6 rows extending nearly to labellum apex. Column 9–11 × 4–4.5 mm, translucent dark red; basal glands c. 1.3 mm long, shiny yellow with a red stalk.
Highly localised, mostly from a single, small area in Victoria; growing on gentle slopes in heathy forest in freely draining, grey to brown, sandy loam.
