Characteristics

Leaf 150–270 × 2–3 mm, base red. Flower stem 150–360 mm tall, 1-or 2-flowered. Flowers 7–10 × 10–14 mm, on long ovaries (7–8 mm long), dull pink or whitish, externally pinkish with brown central bands, densely glandular; labellum pink or white with narrow, dark red bars, midlobe pale yellow; calli yellow to orange; column whitish with red bars. Dorsal sepal 10–15 × 2.5–4 mm, incurved. Lateral sepals 10–18 × 3.5–6 mm, porrect. Petals 10–17 × 3–5 mm, spreading or incurved. Labellum 5–7 × 5.5–7.5 mm; lateral lobes entire; midlobe porrect to slightly recurved, with 8–10 short, marginal teeth. Basal calli 4, c. 0.7 mm long, white; lamina calli c. 0.6 mm long, in 2 rows nearly to base of midlobe. Column 5–7 × 2.2 mm.

Environment

Locally common; mainly growing in damp, sandy heathland and coastal scrub in moss pads and moisture-retentive sandy loam. Some populations from E Vic. and Tas. occur at higher elevations (up to 750 m altitude) in high rainfall areas and grow in dense litter, sometimes on rotting logs, in tall, wet forest, montane forest and rainforest require further comparative study.
