Loosely tufted perennial with slender creeping rhizomes.. Culms 35–45 cm. high, slender, scaberulous, ascending, rooting and branched at the lower nodes.. Leaf-blades up to 6 cm. long and 2 mm. wide, firm, ± scaberulous, with a subpungent tip; ligules 3–6 mm. long.. Panicle erect, narrowly oblong, 5–6 cm. long and 0.8–1.2 cm. wide, spike-like.. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 4.5–5 mm. long, purplish; glumes narrowly lanceolate, minutely scaberulous on the keel above, acuminate; lemma 2.5–3 mm. long, firmly membranous, asperulous towards the apex, 5-nerved, the laterals excurrent into 4 mucros; awn ± 2 mm. long, arising at about the middle of the back; callus-hairs 3.5 mm. long, exceeding the floret.
