Characteristics

Solitary climbing palm to 15 m tall; stem to 22 mm diam. Leaves cirrate, to 5 m long (including cirrus); leaf sheaths with dense needle-like brown spines to 40 mm long, randomly arranged; petiole 0–45 cm long, sparsely spiny; rachis ridged, spiny. Pinnae 10–22 each side of rachis, single or clustered in groups of 2–5, broadly lanceolate, to 40 cm long, to 7 cm wide, acuminate, firmly papyraceous, dark green adaxially, lighter green abaxially, with prominent midrib. Cirrus with recurved black-tipped spines. Staminate and pistillate inflorescences to 2.5 m long; lateral branches distichous, to 30 cm long. Staminate flower to 5 mm long. Pistillate flower to 4 mm long. Fruit globose, to 13 mm diam., white.
