Characteristics

Clustering climbing palm to 40 m tall; stems to 30 mm diam. Leaves cirrate, to 6.5 m long (including cirrus); leaf sheaths with dense needle-like yellowish green spines to 60 mm long, randomly arranged; petiole 5–7 cm long, spiny; rachis flat adaxially, spiny. Pinnae 40–100 each side of rachis, regularly arranged, narrowly lanceolate, to 45 cm long, to 22 mm wide, acuminate, papyraceous, dull midgreen adaxially, only slightly lighter abaxially, with midrib and 2 pairs of veins prominent. Staminate and pistillate inflorescences to 2 m long; lateral branches distichous, to 30 cm long, with clustered hooked spines. Staminate flower to 3 mm long. Pistillate flower to 5 mm long. Fruit globose, to 13 mm diam., white-cream.

A climbing palm with many thorns. It forms large clumps. The stems are 35 m long and 2.5 cm wide. The leaves are 2.6 m long. The leaves climb upwards but arch over. The leaves have 80-100 shiny-green leaflets. The leaflets are 25 cm long and 2 cm wide. The leaf sheath has spines about 5 cm long. The leaflets are limp and regularly spaced. They taper towards the tip. There are 4 m long stalks at the ends of many leaves which helps the plant climb.

Environment

A tropical plant. It is very frost sensitive. They need a well-drained soil. Seedlings need to be in the shade. In northern Australia it grows from sea level to 400 m altitude.
