Callichilia Stapf

Genus

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae

Characteristics

Shrubs or lianas, glabrous in all parts; white latex present in most parts. Leaves opposite; petiole with a single row of colleters in the axils. Inflorescences one or two, at branch apex just below its ramification, pendulous, pedunculate, cymose, congested. Flowers actinomorphic. Corolla white; lobes in bud overlapping to the left. Stamens included; anthers introrse, narrowly oblong, apiculate or obtuse, auriculate at the base. Pistil glabrous; ovary broadly ovoid, of 2 almost free carpels, surrounded at the base by a shallowly lobed almost free disk; pistil head composed of a 5-ribbed or-winged clavuncular body, each wing between the auriculae of the anther, stigma obscure. Fruit berry-like, many-seeded, the two mericarps free or partly connate, yellow to orange; wall thin, pulp fleshy; aril very thin. Seeds ovoid, with deeply pitted testa and slightly ruminate endosperm
More
Corolla tube carnose, glabrous except for pilose ridges leading downward from the base of the filaments inside; tube cylindrical in the lower part, wider in the upper and there cylindrical or infundibuliform; lobes membranaceous, obtriangular, oblique, with two apices, one acute and one rounded.
Sepals connate at the extreme base only, imbricate, much shorter than the corolla, inside with 1–4 rows of minute glands near the base.
Pistil glabrous; carpels connate at the very base only; disk present; style slender, clavuncula 5-winged; stigma small.
Shrubs or lianas, glabrous, with white latex present; branches unarmed, lenticellate; trunk dichotomously branched.
Leaves decussate, those of a pair equal or unequal, subsessile or petiolate; petiole with colleters at the base.
Inflorescences 1–2 in the forks of branches, pendulous, pedunculate, congested, cymose; bracts with colleters.
Fruit berry-like, many-seeded, the two mericarps free, or (only in C. orientalis) semi-syncarpous; wall thin.
Seeds ovoid, testa reticulate and deeply pitted; endosperm copious, surrounding the straight embryo.
Filaments shorter than the anthers; anthers glabrous, auriculate at the base, 2-celled.
Flowers actinomorphic, often fragrant.
Stamens included, connivent in a cone.
