Shrub to 5 m tall. Branches spreading, flexuous. Leaves 3-5 mm long on ultimate branchlets, green to slightly glaucous; dorsal surface acutely keeled. Male cones solitary, ovoid, to 3 mm long. Female cones solitary or grouped on stout, often clustered fruiting branchlets, depressed-globular, to 20 mm diam., persistent and holding seeds for several years after maturity; cone scales 6, thick, with a large, acute, conical, dorsal protuberance near the apex and frequently with a broad dorsal furrow below, not separating towards base, incurved after opening; alternate scales reduced; larger scales oblong, apically broadly obtuse; columella usually broad, simple and apically 3-angled, c. 4 mm high. Seeds usually 6, chestnut-coloured; wings 1 or 2, unequal, the largest c. 4 mm wide.
