Genus

Gymnosperms > Cupressales > Cupressaceae

Characteristics

Monoecious trees or shrubs. Branches erect, spreading or fastigiate. Bark persistent, hard and compact (fibrous in C. macleayana ). Juvenile leaves acicular, triangular in cross-section, in whorls of 4, spreading, basally shortly decurrent. Adult leaves in alternating whorls of 3, decurrent for much of their length; free tip triangular in section and often appressed; dorsal surface rounded or keeled. Male cones terminal on short branches, solitary, paired or clustered, comprising numerous alternating, trimerous whorls of imbricate scales; each with 2-6 abaxial microsporangia; pollen spherical, not saccate. Female cones solitary or clustered on short lateral branches, comprising 2 whorls of 3 fertile scales with a reduced internode, to form a 6-merous cone (rarely 8 in species 12 & 14); outer whorl of scales often smaller than the inner; fertile scales each with 1-8 erect ovules and subtended by an adnate sterile bract which may form a dorsal protuberance. Mature cones persistent or deciduous. Seeds 1-8 per scale, 1-3-winged.
More
Monoecious trees or shrubs. Branchlets not obviously flattened, in several planes, with ultimate shoots angular. Juvenile lvs needle-like or subulate, in whorls of 4. Adult lvs scale-like, in whorls of 3-(4), lacking prominent dorsal gland. ♂ strobili (cones) solitary and terminal on short ultimate shoots, or several towards shoot apex, cylindric to oblong, usually yellow, with numerous stamens in whorls of 3. ♀ cones solitary or several on short lateral shoots, globose to ovoid, ripening in 1-2 years. Scales 6 or 8, in 2 whorls attached round central column, their bases uniting after fertilisation to appear as 1 whorl, the alternate scales (corresponding to outer whorl) shorter and narrower, with a subapical mucronate boss or umbo on each scale, smooth or verrucose; ovules 6-c. 55 to each scale. Mature cone persistent, sometimes enlarging after maturity. Fertile seeds 1-2-(3) on each scale, winged; cotyledons 2.
Shrubs or trees evergreen. Branchlets angled or furrowed-cylindrical, variously oriented. Leaves in whorls of 3--5. Adult leaves scalelike, appressed, abaxial surface keeled or rounded, free portion to 1 mm, abaxial glands absent. Pollen cones solitary or in small clusters, with 4--15 whorls of sporophylls, each with 2--4 pollen sacs. Seed cones maturing in 1--2 years, of 1--2 sizes, often remaining unopened for many years, ovoid or globose, 1--3.5 cm; scales persistent, in 2 equally inserted whorls of 3(--4), valvate, rhombic-deltate, basifixed, thick and woody. Seeds 2--9 per scale, round or 3-angled, broadly 1--3-winged; cotyledons 2.
Monoecious trees or shrubs, densely branched to base. Juvenile leaves trimerous, acicular, spreading. Adult leaves trimerous, appressed, pungent, acute or obtuse, decurrent. Male cones terminal, ovoid or cylindrical, comprising numerous (more than 18) trimerous, fertile scales in alternating whorls; each scale with 2-4 abaxial microsporangia. Female cones solitary, terminal on short lateral shoots, comprising 6 whorled, equal fertile scales; each scale subtended by numerous bracts which progressively decrease in size away from the cone, with 2 erect adaxial ovules. Seeds pale brown, 3-winged.
