Characteristics

Shrub or tree (rarely up to 25 m. tall); bark pale grey to brownish.. Leaves deciduous; blade ovate or elliptic, sometimes almost obovate, apex obtusely acuminate, base broadly cuneate to rounded, or even subcordate, juvenile ones papyraceous, subcoriaceous with age, initially microglandular and glutinose, finally glabrous, entire, 8–26 cm. long, 4–15 cm. broad; lateral nerves 5–7 pairs prominent beneath, reticulation lax, a little raised beneath; petiole (2.5–)4–10 cm. long; stipules linear, caducous, 2–5 mm. long.. Flowers solitary or 2 or 3 in a fascicle from leafless axils of the one year old shoots, 7–10 cm. across; pedicels 2–4 cm. long at anthesis, accrescent to 5 cm. in fruit.. Sepals ovate-suborbicular, glandular dorsally, persistent during anthesis, 1.6–2.5 cm. long, 1.1–1.7 cm. broad.. Petals 12 or 13, obovate to oblanceolate, shortly clawed, 3.5–5.5 cm. long, 1.2–2.7 cm. broad.. Filaments 1.5–2.5 cm. long; anthers mucronulate, 4–5 mm. long.. Ovary covered with warty glands; style ± 1.2 cm. long, ending in 6–8 stigmatic branches ± 3 mm. long.. Capsule subglobular, broadly conical or beaked distally, at first green mottled with white, turning orange as it ripens, (5–)7(–8) cm. long, 5–6(–8) cm. across; pericarp 8–10 mm. thick..
