Characteristics

Tree to 35 m high. Terminal bud plump, 5–10 (–13) mm long; uppermost axillary buds 1–1.2 mm long, rounded. Twigs puberulous. Leaves ±concolorous; petiole 1–2 mm wide, glabrous or farinose; lamina obovate to elliptic or suboblong, (2.8–) 5–12.5 cm long, (1–) 2.5–5.5 cm wide, base cuneate or rounded, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, midvein from above lamina base to midpoint depressed, glabrous or farinose above or puberulent when young. Inflorescence axes tomentose or pilose to puberulous, usually unbranched, but possibly branching into 3, each to 5 mm long. Pedicel 3–7 mm long, tomentose to puberulent. Flowers 10–15 mm diam.; tepals 4 (–6); outer tepals ovate; stamens 45–80, 5–5.5 mm long, anthers oblong, 0.5–1.3 mm long; style 1.5–1.7 mm long; stigma peltate. Fruit globose or subglobose to ovoid, apex acute, 13–19 mm long, 10–16 mm wide.

Environment

Savannah woodland or riverine gallery forest, rarely in secondary forest, at elevations from near sea level to 215 metres. It can form dense stands in the rainforest when growing close to permanent water.
