Characteristics

Perennial herbs with subglobose tunicated bulbs. Leaves radical, linear, annual, elongating after flowering; venation parallel. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate, usually pink or yellow, rarely white, fragrant, in scapose umbels; spathes 2 or 3, narrowly ovate. Perianth funnel-shaped; segments connate at base; lobes 6, obovate, mucronate, slightly spreading. Stamens 6, inserted at throat of perianth tube, the lower parts of filaments expanded and united into a corona; corona truncate or lobed between free parts of filaments; anthers versatile, dehiscing longitudinally, introrse. Ovary inferior, globose, 1-locular; placentation parietal; ovules 2; style 1; stigma small. Fruit subglobose, 1-'seeded', rupturing irregularly as 'seed' enlarges. 'Seeds' large, globose to ovoid, smooth, green.
