Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Calycosiphonia

Characteristics

Small tree or straggling shrub with arching branches 2–8.5 m. tall; young branches glabrous or puberulous; older branches covered with thin light brown shiny bark.. Leaves commonly drying brownish black, glabrous; blades oblong-elliptic, elliptic or sometimes oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, 6.5–22 cm. long, 2.3–8 cm. wide, acute or rounded then abruptly acuminate at apex with the acumen 0.8–4 cm. long and 1–4.5 mm. wide, acute to obtuse or sometimes cuneate at base; tertiary nerves reticulate, raised on both faces; petioles 0.5–1.3 cm. long; stipule-limbs 1.5–3 mm. long, light brown when mature; lobe subulate to linear, 2–5 mm. long.. Flowers 1–3 per axil; inflorescence-stalks 2–4(–7 in fruit) mm. long; calyculi (2–)3, 1–5 mm. long, usually the upper one the biggest and often provided with either linear lobes, 1–5 mm. long, or subfoliaceous lobes, 0.5–1.7 cm. long and 2.5–4 mm. wide.. Calyx-tube 1.5–2 mm. long; limb 2.5–7 mm. long, characteristically split down one side, ± truncate or shortly and unequally toothed, glabrous and without colleters inside.. Corolla-tube 0.7–1.4 cm. long, 3–4.5 mm. wide at top, 0.75–1 mm. wide at base, pubescent inside; lobes oblong, oblong-lanceolate or occasionally narrowly ovate, 7–1.7 cm. long, 3–6 mm. wide, acute to acuminate.. Anthers dark in colour.. Stigma exserted; lobes ± linear or sometimes slightly spathulate.. Fruit green-yellow, ellipsoid, 0.9–1.3 cm. long, 0.4–1.2 cm. wide, (1–)2-seeded.. Seeds blackish, usually hemispherical, but occasionally biconvex (in case of 1-seeded fruit), 0.6–1.1 cm. across, sometimes with an indistinct ovate ridge which becomes more sharply defined at the narrow (apical) end..
