Terrestrial herb with tuberous root.. Stem much branched at the base, sparsely dichotomously branched in its upper part, up to several m. long, climbing by means of the coiling petioles and pedicels.. Petioles of about the same length as the leaf-blades; leaf-blades triangular to pentagonal, 2.5–7.5 cm. long, 1.5–6.5 cm. wide, cordate, acute, obtusely crenate to sharply dentate.. Hypanthium broad, cupular, terete.. Calyx-lobes 2–3.6 cm. long, 0.5–1 cm. wide, acute, entire, erect, entirely fused in bud forming a cup-like cover, in open flowers usually fused for a few mm. from the base.. Corolla 4–7.5 cm. long, funnel-shaped to almost cylindrical, orange-red with darker venation, often lighter inside.. Stamens with broad shield-like filament-bases; anthers 9–15 mm. long.. Fruit almost spherical, yellow or reddish.. Seeds ovate to elliptic, 1.5–2.1 mm. long, 1.0–1.3 mm. wide, dark brown with pitted surface.
