Characteristics

Woody liane to 6 m long, or erect shrub to 5 m high; branches pendulous, glabrescent. Branchlets, pedicels and inflorescence with close, crisped, white tomentum (Dunlop et al. 1995: 191). Leaves: lamina ovate to lanceolate or narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute or acuminate, (3–) 3.5–9.5 cm long, (1–) 1.5–4.6 cm wide, glabrous; base attenuate to shortly attenuate; lateral veins mostly 7–9 pairs, inconspicuous, rarely somewhat prominent beneath; petiole 1–6 mm long, hairy. Spikes 1–4 in leaf axil, 1–3 cm long, with 1–9 flowers, sweetly scented; bracts lanceolate, 0.5–1 mm long, persistent. Perianth urceolate (tepals united, the tube urceolate), greenish yellow, cream or white, the tube c. 1.5–2 mm long, the 4 (sometimes 3 or 5) lobes c. 0.5–0.7 mm long. Stamens 4, as long as perianth-tube. Disc scales slightly fleshy, c. oblong, 3-toothed, c. 0.5 mm long. Ovary ovoid, c. 1 mm long; style c. 0.5 mm long. Drupe ellipsoidal to ± globular, 9–15 mm long, 8–13 (–15) mm wide, orange to red.
