Characteristics

Solitary palm to 20 m; trunk to 40 cm diam. Leaves 5–15, to 7 m long, to 5 m wide, held horizontal; secondary rachises 12–15 each side of rachis, evenly arranged on rachis; petiole and leaf base with dense white tomentum. Pinnules to 30 cm long. Inflorescence to 3 m long, branched to 2 orders; bracts 5–7, deciduous. Flowers cream. Staminate flower to 20 mm long; stamens 22–36, shorter than petals. Pistillate flower to 9 mm long. Fruit subglobose, to 22 mm long, to 28 mm wide, dull crimson to black; mesocarp thin with few thick fibres. Seeds 1–3, hemispherical; endosperm deeply ruminate; embryo sub-basal.
