Panicle 4–18 cm. long; involucres globose to ovoid, 6–9 mm. long; inner spines flattened, connate for 1/3–2/3 their length to form a cup, pubescent and not grooved (or indistinctly so) on the face, ciliate on the margins, antrorsely scaberulous, aciculate at the tip; outer bristles filiform, mostly shorter than the inner, rarely much reduced.. Spikelets 2(–3) per burr, 4–6 mm. long.
