Lower parts of stems glabrous or with a few rigid hairs, or slightly scabrous, bridged, the upper stem with 4 ridges.
Basal leaves elongate, linear lanceolate, long cuneate below, entire or toothed, glabrous or rarely slightly setose.
Receptacle bracts dark tipped, long acuminate or cuspidate with a long spinous tip, hairy except at the tip.
Mature fruit up to 10 x 3·5 mm., slightly secund, hairy all over except on the prominent ridges.
Involucral bracts blackish, ovate–lanceolate with short adpressed hairs.
Lower stem thick and woody, upper hollow, simple or sparingly branched.
Involucel ± furrowed, hairy, corona of 4 long teeth, densely hairy.
Upper stem leaves entire or more rarely pinnati–partite, glabrous.
Capitula globose, up to 30 mm. in diameter in flower.
A perennial rhizomatous herb, up to 1–5 m.
