Characteristics

Perennial herb up to 1.8 m. high.. Stems erect, unbranched below the inflorescence, terete or 6-sided, glabrous, rarely the lower internodes with scattered retrorse hairs.. Radical and lower stem-leaves elongate lanceolate, long-cuneate below, entire or toothed, glabrous, rarely sparingly setose; stem-leaves entire or more rarely pinnatipartite and smaller.. Heads hemispherical, 2.5–3.5 cm. in diameter.. Involucral bracts blackish, ovate-lanceolate.. Receptacle bracts acuminate or cuspidate often with a long spinous tip, grey tomentose with villous margins or shortly silvery pubescent with darker tips.. Involucel with 4 long teeth, densely villous.. Calyx small, villous.. Corolla 8–10 mm. long, white or cream, marginal flowers longer than the inner.. Fig. 2/1–4, p. 5.
