Leaves entire or toothed in the upper part, or sometimes with a few linear or linear–lanceolate lobes, hairy on the undersides and margins.
Basal and lower stem leaves elongate, lanceolate or linear–lanceolate in outline, with long petioles, up to 3 times as long as blade.
Stems simple or branched, often hollow and with 6 pale coloured ridges, glabrous or slightly scabrid in the lower parts.
Upper leaves narrowly linear, entire or with 1–2 pairs of entire linear lobes at the base, hairy, scabrous or glabrous.
Involucral bracts widely ovate–obtuse, scabrid with minute hairs on the margins, dark coloured at the tip.
Receptacular bracts lanceolate to ovate–lanceolate, sub acuminate, with dark tips, pilose.
Involucel furrowed, long hairy, corona of 4 angular acuminate teeth.
Perennial herb with tough woody rhizome, plants (1)1·5–(2) m.
Mature fruit up to 7·5 x 2 mm., with long bristly hairs.
Capitula globose 20–(25) mm. in diameter in flower.
