Perennial herb with a woody rhizome up to 2 m., stems simple or branched, glabrous in the upper parts, hairy in the lower parts with simple and short hairs, and retrorse long hairs with many–celled glandular bases.
Involucral bracts blackish, ovate–ovate lanceolate, receptacular bracts ovate–lanceolate to oblanceolate, suddenly cuspidate, dark, hairy on the edges, hispid at the centre portion of the outer surface.
Lower leaves elongate, lanceolate, usually entire, crenate or slightly toothed, occasionally with a few narrow lobes at base, rarely lyrate, with a long petiole, up to 3 times as long as the blade.
Involucel furrowed, hairy in the lower parts and on the veins, corona membranaceous, entire, crenate or with 4 ± irregular broadly triangular lobes.
Upper stem leaves narrow linear, entire or with 1–2 pairs of entire, linear lobes at the base, hairy, scabrous or glabrous.
Leaves hairy on margins and veins of the underside, hairs glandular with a many celled base.
Mature fruit ± glabrous, slightly hairy above, secund, up to 6 mm. x 1·75 mm.
Capitula globose, up to 25 mm. in diameter in flower.
Corolla white, cream or yellow.
Calyx villous.
