Characteristics

Procumbent perennial herbs. Leaves paired, petiolate, well developed and with the lateral venation clearly evident; stipule-sheath divided into several subulate colleter-tipped lobes. Flowers white, medium-sized, hermaphrodite, probably dimorphic, mostly in 3-flowered terminal inflorescences, less often reduced to 1–2, ebracteolate. Calyx-tube campanulate; lobes 5, unequal, distinctly spathulate. Corolla-tube long, narrowly tubular, the throat densely hairy within; lobes 5, ovate-oblong. Stamens included in long-styled forms, the upper part of the corolla-tube widened at the point of inclusion. Ovary 2-locular, each locule with numerous ovules on peltate placentas; style exserted, minutely tomentellous; stigma bilobed, the lobes cylindrical. Fruit a capsule with thinly bony walls, quite markedly beaked, septicidally and loculicidally dehiscent at the apex. Seeds numerous, brown, angular, pitted.
