Perennial herb 13–50 cm. tall; stems branched and woody at the base, densely pubescent with short greyish spreading hairs and usually some longer ones also.. Leaf-blades ± grey-green, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or obovate-oblong, 1.5–2.7 cm. long, 0.8–1.3 cm. wide, acute at the apex, attenuate at the base, coarsely dentate or subentire, sparsely to densely pubescent with short hairs; nerves ± raised beneath but venation not or only slightly reticulate; petioles 1–4 mm. long or obsolete, pubescent as the stems.. Flowers in terminal ± dense many-flowered spikes 4.5–12 cm. long; rhachis densely pubescent; bracts narrowly lanceolate, 3–4 mm. long, 0.5–1 mm. wide, densely shortly pubescent.. Calyx tubular, 6.5–7 mm. long, 5-ribbed, densely shortly pubescent, shortly 5-toothed, splitting in fruit.. Corolla deep yellow, yellow brown, apricot or purplish, hypocrateriform; tube cylindric, curved, 1.4–1.5 cm. long, slightly widened at the apex, glabrous; limb 5-lobed; lobes oblong, 2–3.4 mm. long, 1.2–2 mm. wide, obtuse.. Stamens included or anther-tips slightly exserted.. Ovary 1.5 mm. long; style filiform, ± 1.4 cm. long.. Nutlets straw-coloured or black, 4 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, longitudinally ribbed at base outside, reticulate at the apex, obtuse.
