Low bush, woody at base, somewhat branched; branches and branchlets slender, brownish, obtusely tetragonal, densely or sparsely puberulent or subhirtellous, often slightly sulcate on opposite sides; nodes indistinctly annulate or not annulate, usually more densely hirtellous; principal internodes 2-3 cm long; sterigmata not conspicuous; leaves decussate-opposite; petioles very slender, 1-7 mm long, very sparsely puberulent or glabrescent, margined; blades membranous, uniformly bright green on both surfaces or slightly lighter beneath, obovate or oblanceolate, 0.8-3.5 cm long, 0.6-2 cm wide, rounded or obtuse at apex (in outline), subacuminate or cuneate at base, rather uniformly crenate-dentate from the middle to the apex with coarse, broadly triangular, sharply acute, rather spreading teeth, glabrescent on both surfaces (or obscurely strigillose-hirtellous with minute scattered hairs on the venation and margins), rather sparsely impressed-punctate beneath; midrib very slender, flat above, slightly subprominulent beneath; secondaries very slender, 2-4 per side, arcuate-ascending, usually obscure or indiscernible on both surfaces; inflorescence terminal, racemiform, erect, straight, terminating the branches and branchlets, 4-18 cm long, 5-12 mm wide before and after anthesis, 3-3.5 cm wide during anthesis, rather loosely many-flowered, the flowers loosely imbricate except toward the base where they may be scattered, the calyxes somewhat divergent at all times; peduncles 1-2 cm long, exactly similar to the adjacent branch or branchlet in color, texture, shape, and puberulence; pedicels filiform, 2-3.3 mm long, densely puberulent; bracts sessile, lanceolate, 3-4 mm long, long-acuminate at apex, rather sparsely puberulent or pilose; bracteoles 1 or 2 near the base of the pedicel, subulate, 1-1.5 mm long, puberulent; calyx tubular, 8 to 10 mm long, about 1.4 mm wide at base, gradually ampliate to 2.2 mm at apex, somewhat curvate, conspicuously 5-costate and-plicate, membranous-hyaline between the stout ribs, puberulent outside, its rim straight or slightly oblique, 5-dentate or-apiculate, densely villosulous, the teeth subequal, 0.9-1 mm long, acute, densely puberulent; corolla hypocrateriform, its tube narrow-cylindric or infundibular, conspicuously curvate, 13-16 mm long, about 0.8 mm wide at base, ampliate to 3.6 mm at apex, glabrous on both surfaces, its limb 5-parted, the lobes unequal, obovate, 5.1-6.6 mm long, 5.1-5.7 mm wide, conspicuously retuse at apex, very venose; stamens 4, didynamous, included, the upper pair inserted about 1.4 mm above the lower pair and not quite equaling the corolla-mouth; filaments filiform, minutely glandular-puberulent, the upper ones about 1.4 mm long, the lower ones about 0.8 mm long; style capillary, slightly thickened above, 10-12 mm long, glabrous; stigma subcupuliform, ascending obliquely from the apex of the style and dilated into an oblong sub-bilabiate subrecurved lamina; ovary cylindric, about 2.2 mm long and uniformly 0.7 mm wide throughout, glabrous; fruiting-calyx gibbous; schizocarp oblong, 5-6 mm long, 1.7-2 mm wide, often minutely apiculate at apex, composed of 2 coherent cocci, not separating spontaneously, stramineous or brownish, glabrous, reticulate-sculptured on the upper 1/2, prominently few-striate longitudinally from there to the base.
