Herb or erect shrublet 0.35–1.2 m. tall, base quite woody with grey bark.. Leaf-blades ± ovate, 1–4.7 cm. long, 0.7–2.5 cm. wide, rounded at apex, rounded, truncate or cuneate at the base, coarsely crenate, very finely pubescent or glabrous save on the nerves; petiole 0.3–2 cm. long, densely short spreading pubescent.. Spikes dense, 6–40 cm. long; bracts narrowly lanceolate, 2.5–4 mm. long.. Calyx 9(–10.5) mm. long, densely very shortly spreading velvety puberulous; teeth 0.1–0.25 mm. long.. Buds often tinged pink or purple.. Corolla greenish yellow, yellow or yellowish cream; tube 1.2–1.5 cm. long; lobes 1.5–2.5 mm. long and wide, obtuse.. Style 1.1–1.3 cm. long, ± persistent.. Nutlets linear-oblong, 4.5–6 mm. long, rounded and ribbed outside, with apical wing 1.8–2.5 mm. long, ± reticulate outside near the wing, excavated and minutely verruculose inside.
