Characteristics

Succulent subshrub, old plants sparsely clumped, 30-80 mm tall, 50-120 mm diam., deciduous, dormant corpuscles castanet-or jacaranda-pod-shaped. Leaf-pairs long, spreading, and divided vs. short, erect, and united, grey-green to purplish, with a waxen sheen in damp conditions and often irregularly and slightly grooved, margins knife-like, deep green or rarely red. Flowers very large, petals rich yellow. Fruit 9-12-locular, robust and persistent.
