Widespread and common from coast to alpine regions. Found growing in moist, humid habitats including wet sclerophyll forest, tall forest, riverine forest and sheltered areas in drier types of open forest in well-structured, loamy soils and clay loam, less commonly sands. In alpine and subalpine regions it grows in boggy sites near small streams, in moist to wet herbfield and in sphagnum mounds, sometimes with just the tips of the leaves protruding above the moss.
