Annuals, erect or prostrate, stolons absent. Flowering culms 16–42 cm high. Leaves: ligule c. 0.5 mm long; blade 1–9 cm long, 0.5–2 mm wide. Inflorescence branches (2–) 3–7, erect or spreading and ascending, (1.4–) 3–5 cm long. Spikelets pedicellate, 2–3-flowered, with 1 floret bisexual. Glumes smooth, with midnerve scaberulous or scabrous; upper glume 2.8–5 mm long. Callus bearded. Basal lemma 4–6 mm long, prominently lobed, cartilaginous, scaberulous or tuberculate, not sulcate, scaberulous or tuberculate, with silky, erect hairs 0.5–1.5 mm long arising in the upper half of the lateral nerves; awns 3; median awn 6–11 mm long; lateral awns 3.5–8 mm long. Caryopsis elliptic to oblanceolate, 1.5–2.3 mm long, glossy, golden. Incomplete florets 1 (–2), separated from bisexual floret; lemma 2-lobed almost to base, with apices acuminate, not inflated, awned.
Grows on a range of soiltypes but mostly heavy soils in seasonally wet areas such as claypans, riverflood flats, creek beds and creek banks. Usually common where occurring orco-dominant with other grasses, often in Eucalyptus woodland, or associatedwith Melaleuca spp. Exhibits weedy behaviour in disturbed areas withlighter soils, such as railway enclosures.
