Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Chloris

Characteristics

Annuals or biennials, usually erect, with or without stolons. Flowering culms 60–105 cm high. Leaves: ligule 0.4–0.6 mm long; blade 11–28 cm long, 1.5–4.2 mm wide. Inflorescence branches 6–12, loosely appressed or erect, 5–7 cm long. Spikelets subsessile, 3-flowered, with 1 bisexual floret. Glumes smooth or papillose, with midnerve smooth or scabrous; upper glume 2.7–3.3 mm long. Callus bearded. Basal lemma 2.7–3.3 mm long, entire or obscurely lobed, mucronulate (with a minute, hook-like bristle), cartilaginous, sulcate each side of the midnerve, smooth; hairs appressed to erect, 0.2–0.6 mm long (usually longest on midnerve); midnerve pubescent or silky in the middle; lateral nerves pubescent at least in the upper half, with hairs becoming longer and silky towards the apex. Caryopsis narrowly elliptic and curved, 1.3–1.7 mm long, reddish brown. Incomplete florets enclosed by bisexual floret; lemmas truncate, obscurely notched, inflated, awnless (but lowest lemma with minute apical hook-like bristle).
More
Annual; culms up to 1 m. high, erect or geniculately ascending, often rooting at the lower nodes.. Leaf-blades flat or folded, up to 35 cm. long, 3–5 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 3–12 loosely digitate spikes 2–10 cm. long.. Spikelets 3-flowered, (0–)1–2-awned; lower glume 1.5–2 mm. long; upper glume 2–3 mm. long, including the awn-point; lowest lemma ovate-elliptic in side view, 2.5–3 mm. long, pallid, occasionally black, sparsely to densely ciliate on the margins and keel, the awn 2.5–5 mm. long, rarely absent; callus rounded, ciliate; 2nd lemma a glabrous clavate scale 1.5–2 mm. long, projecting from and different in shape to the lowest lemma, awnless or with an awn 2–3 mm. long; 3rd lemma a glabrous clavate awnless scale 1–1.25 mm. long.
Spikelets 3-flowered, (0)1–2-awned; inferior glume 1.2–2 mm long; superior glume 2.2–3.2 mm long; floret callus rounded; fertile lemma 2.5–3 mm long, ovate-elliptic in profile, pallid or occasionally black, sparsely to densely ciliate on the margins and keel, the awn 2.5–3.6 mm long, rarely absent; 2nd lemma a glabrous clavate scale 1.6–2.2 mm long, awnless or with an awn 2–3 mm long; 3rd lemma a glabrous clavate awnless scale 1–1.25 mm long.
Robust annual up to 100 cm tall, erect or geniculately ascending and rooting from the nodes; leaf laminas up to 19 cm × 2–4 mm, flat or folded, tapering to a fine point.
Inflorescence of 6–13 loosely digitate racemes 2.5–8.5 cm long.
