Annuals, erect or decumbent, with or without stolons. Flowering culms 18–60 (–90) cm high. Leaves: ligule 0.3–1 mm long; blade 9–19 cm long, 2–4 mm wide. Inflorescence branches 6–10, appressed or erect, (2–) 4–10 cm long. Spikelets pedicellate, 2–3-flowered, with 1 or 2 florets bisexual. Glumes smooth, with midnerve smooth or scabrous; upper glume 3–5.4 mm long. Callus bearded. Basal lemma 3.5–5.5 mm long, prominently lobed, cartilaginous, not sulcate, smooth or scaberulous, with silky, spreading hairs 1–2 mm long on upper submargins, rarely pubescent near lower midnerve and margins; awns 1 or 3; median awn 9–25 mm long; lateral awns to 6 mm long. Caryopsis elliptic, 2–3 mm long, reddish brown. Incomplete florets 1–2, separated from the bisexual floret and diverging at maturity; lemma 2-lobed to about half its length, with lobes acute, not inflated, awned.
Known from sandy and silty soils in moistlow-lying and near coastal areas, and also growing on podsolic, reddish brownand grey brown soils or dark grey loam, in disturbed areas such as clearedeucalypt forest and railway enclosures.
