Perennial; culms erect or decumbent at the base, branching, 15-60 cm. high, distinctly flattened; sheaths compressed-keeled, longer than the internodes, glabrous; blades thin, flat, mostly 4-10 cm. long, or the lower ones sometimes longer, smooth or scabrous, sometimes sparsely pilose; ligule 0.5 mm. long, minutely ciliate; spikes 5-15 (mostly more than 10), 4-8 cm. long, slender, straight or flexuous, subdigi-tate or in 2 or 3 approximate fascicles, ascending or spreading; spikelets appressed; glumes acuminate, 1-nerved, the first 1-2 mm. long, the second 2-3 mm. long, glabrous, or scabrous on the keel; fertile floret about 2.5-3 mm. long, narrow, the callus bearded, the lemma glabrous on the back, short-ciliate on the upper part of the margins, the awn 5-10 mm. long, scaberulous; rudiment very slender, 1 mm. long, glabrous, the awn 4-6 mm. long, scaberulous.
