Perennial; culms up to 1.5 m. high, tufted, erect, occasionally geniculately ascending.. Leaf-blades flat or folded, 10–40 cm. long, 2–10 mm. wide, tapering towards the apex; basal sheaths strongly keeled and flabellate.. Inflorescence a compact, purplish or yellowish, feathery head of numerous spikes 3–8 cm. long borne on an axis 6–18 cm. long.. Spikelets 3–4-flowered, 3–4-awned; lower glume 1–1.5 mm. long; upper glume 2–2.8 mm. long; lowest lemma elliptic in side view, 1.5–2 mm. long, pallid, sparsely ciliate on the keel and margins, the awn 8–17 mm. long; callus rounded, ciliate; 2nd–4th lemmas progressively smaller, reduced to elliptic glabrous awned scales.
Spikelets 2–4-flowered, 2–4-awned; inferior glume 1–1.5 mm long; superior glume 1.6–2 mm long; floret callus rounded; fertile lemma 1.5–2 mm long, elliptic in profile, pallid, sparsely ciliate on the margins and keel, the awn 9–11 mm long; 2nd–4th lemmas projecting from the side of the fertile lemma, progressively smaller, reduced to elliptic glabrous awned scales.
Perennial, rhizomatous and tufted, up to 1.25 m high. Leaf blades 100-400 mm long, 2-10 mm wide. Spikelets 1-3 mm long. Panicle dense, axis 40-100 mm long; spikes numerous, 30-80 mm long; spikelets 3-or 4-flowered; lower glume 1.0-1.5 mm long; upper glume 2.0-2.8 mm long; lowest lemma 1.5-2.0 mm long, awns 8-17 mm long.
Caespitose perennial up to 150 cm tall, erect or ascending; leaf laminas flat or folded, 6–45 cm × 2–8 mm, tapering to a fine point.
