Characteristics

Annual. Leaf-blades flat, linear; ligule hyaline. Inflorescence of deciduous pseudo-racemes, the rhachis of these bearing broad foliaceous wings which enfold the spikelets and involucres to form an ovoid ball; involucre a rigid spinously lacerate scale. Spikelets ovate-elliptic, dorsally compressed; lower glume a little hyaline scale; upper glume shorter than the spikelet; lower floret reduced to a laterally winged lemma as long as the spikelet; upper lemma as long as the spikelet, cartilaginous, its flat margins covering 1/2 of the palea. Caryopsis broadly elliptic, dorsally compressed.
