Characteristics

Biennial to perennial taprooted herbs. Hairs eglandular, or 0. Stems branching. Lvs basal and cauline; basal lvs runcinate-pinnatifid; cauline lvs usually simple, much smaller. Capitula terminal and axillary, solitary or clustered, sessile or pedunculate. Involucre glabrous to tomentose; outer involucral bracts 1/4-⅓ length of inner bracts; inner bracts ± in 1 series. Receptacle areolate, without hairs or scales. Corolla ligulate, yellow. Style branches filiform, pale. Achenes numerous, pale, with toothed to scaly ribs, beaked; pappus bristles in 2 or more rows, soft, white, usually < achene and beak, simple, free.
