Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 8 m high, deciduous or evergreen, dioecious, rarely monoecious. Leaves: petiole 5–50 mm long; lamina elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, 18–155 mm long, 8–155 mm wide, discolorous; base cordate, attenuate to cuneate; margins sinuate to crenulate-dentate, with 8–19 teeth per side; tip acute to shortly acuminate; venation comprising 4–11 lateral veins and distinct to obscure tertiary reticulate veins; glands 2 at lamina base. Inflorescences up to 130 mm long. Male flowers: pedicels 0.8–3 mm long; sepals 3, lanceolate-ovate, 1.8–2 mm long; stamens 10–20. Female flowers: pedicels 0.5–1.4 mm long; sepals 3, lanceolate-ovate, 0.8–1.2 mm long. Fruit depressed-globose, 3–4 mm long, 5–7 mm diam. [See also Forster 2007: 463.]
